In the beginning...

The journey begins.  I want to keep this blog as a way to journal my journey through weight loss surgery.  Yes, I said it, weight loss surgery.  And yes, if you've ever had a conversation with me, I've always been skeptical and not wanted to go this direction because I felt it was a 'cop out'.  BUT, as I approach 40 with a young and active son and many years left in my teaching career, I have come to the conclusion that it is probably best for me.  I have been up and down and UP for years!  Most recently, as I approached the 300 lb mark, my dr (who I love so very much for her candid talks with me!) brought up surgery.  This was back in January.  I was not in the right mindset yet, and so we tried a weight loss med.  This med was very expensive and after 6 months didn't really do much.  It kept the weight from skyrocketing, but it didn't help me lose.  Part of this is contributed to by my inactivity, which comes a lot from my knee pain (which I will talk about more in another post). So, in a cycle that I am ready to overcome, I talked with my dr this past Monday and she has referred me for a consult for weight loss surgery (WLS).  I am excited to start this process. I know it will be hard, I know it's not the 'easy way out', I know I am going to have to put in some work.  But, what I really know is that in my heart this is the direction I have to go.  I have to be around for my kid, I don't want him to live a life without a mom.  I also want to be able to get out and play with him, not just sit sweating on the sidelines.

Ok, so after all that, I am going to put out here pictures that I just took today.  These will document my before pictures.  I have also purchased some resistance bands that I can use to get some activity in on my arms and upper body, and I purchased this cool Simply Fit Board.  It looks like something I can manage without messing with my knees. :)  I will report when I actually try it!
